Βotulinum Τoxin
Botulinum toxin type A, which is produced by the anaerobic bacterium Clostridium botulinum, is one of the most well-known non-invasive cosmetic treatments. Botulinum toxin was first used during the ‘80s in order to treat certain pathological conditions that were mainly characterized by muscle hyperactivity, such as blepharospasm and strabismus. In recent years, Botox started being used to counteract the excessive activity of the mimic muscles of the face that results in the appearance of wrinkles. Therefore, it is one of the most important non-invasive treatments of aesthetic medicine.
The botulinum toxin A causes a temporary paralysis of the muscles by blocking the release of acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction. In this way, wrinkles caused by muscle hyperactivity are either reduced or eliminated.
The glabella is the most common treatment area. Botox is also used to treat forehead wrinkles, wrinkles around the eyes (crow’s feet) and over the upper lip (smoker’s lines), wrinkles on the corners of the mouth (marionette lines) and wrinkles on the neck and chin. Patients are very satisfied with this treatment which results in a very natural appearance. It should be noted that Botox does not substitute cosmetic surgeries, but it can act proactively and enhance their aesthetic outcome.
Botox can also be used for non-cosmetic purposes, such as to treat migraines and palm or sole hyperhidrosis. In cases of hyperhidrosis, the affected areas are firstly examined and, afterwards, injected with Botox.
